Advancing the most promising Disease Modifying research and treatments

Our Young Investigator Pilot Grant (YIPG) program represents the organization's greatest commitment to translational and clinical research that advances the prevention, treatment and/or ultimate cure for all movement disorders. We fund “high risk/ high reward” research that establishes cross-disease analysis and investigation aimed at developing new insights into the pathophysiology, etiology and/or treatment of multiple movement disorders.

In 2024, Movement Disorders Foundation funded three research projects with specific applicability to Huntington’s disease, as well as one other movement disorder such as Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, or dystonia. Our Core Beliefs

  • Research opportunities that will translate into solutions across the movement disorders spectrum in hopes of rapidly bringing both symptomatic relief and possible cures for those in need.

To be eligible for consideration, applicants are required to address specific applicability to two or more movement disorders in their research and demonstrate the potential to facilitate rapid translation to clinically useful therapies.

Young Investigator Pilot Grants are funded by individual donors like you. Annual grants of $50,000 are awarded to recipients for direct support of research. If substantial productivity is demonstrated in the first year, the grant may be renewed for an additional year if the awardee can demonstrate how the funding will facilitate competition for a NIH R01 grant or equivalent.

Movement Disorders Foundation offers donors at all levels of giving the opportunities to support individual research projects as well as specific disease categories such as Parkinson's and Huntington's disease, dystonia and other movement disorders. There is opportunity in being more efficient and creative with caregivers’ time by providing data and assisting in the development of mobile technologies.

Also, seeking additional scientific approaches to help caregivers have a better quality of life for specific diseases, while looking for similar possibilities with other movement disorders.

We engage in active education for both patients and their caregivers.

A focus of the foundation is providing symposiums - both in person and virtual - for the various movement disorder communities with the latest information in research, treatments and support.

Our Researchers  We encourage research that both has promise in a specific disease, and where possible, may also advance understanding of other movement category diseases. We understand and encourage publication of the research that we fund in keeping with the spirit of a truly collaborative scientific community and emphasize the importance of open access and scientific transparency. We are interested in helping researchers take scientific risks to the benefit of patients as soon as possible, taking into account the risks involved in accelerating the process of treatment discovery, development and application.

Our Donors  We greatly appreciate all donations, including those who support our approach to science and are interested in continuing those research efforts over time as they begin to translate into clinical trials. We look to fund and support relatively high-risk, high-reward innovative research, which has the potential for rapid translation to treatment.
